But first let us have a have look at the history of who exactly is Carl Brashear. Coincidentally, while I was researching on another vintage Omega that we have from 1966, I discovered a near catastrophic event which happened that year. On 17 Jan 1966, a USAF B-52 strategic bomber was re-fuelling mid-air over Spain with a KC135 tanker plane and in a freak accident they collided and exploded. The bigger problem was the payload that the B-52 was carrying were not one but four Hydrogen bombs! Three of the four bombs dropped onto a small fishing village, Palomares in Spain. USA immediately scrambled to contain the embarrassing incident which caused a spat with Spain and the contamination remains a clean up till today.

Three of the bombs were recovered within 24hrs but one was missing and this is where our hero Carl came into the picture. The missing warhead was eventually found on the sea bed. Carl Brashear was one of the 150 divers despatched to recover the bomb but while floating it, a line broke and hit his lower left leg which eventually left him an amputee. He returned to active duty and became the first African-American USN Master Diver and was awarded The Navy and Marine Corps Medal.
