This is a Ref.6084 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer Semi-bubbleback in all steel. Watch is in exceptional condition for it's age.

Our watch here is an early production piece with a rare and very desirable OFFICIALLY in red on it's dial as Rolex was in her infancy to capitalise on the chronometer race in the watch industry during the post-war years. A similar example is featured here on Rolex website.

The non-lock Super-Oyster crown was an attempt by Rolex to move away from screw-lock crowns using more seals in the crown & tube set up so it functions like a regular watch, and wasn't a success. It was used for about three years from 1950 on their Oyster models and today, represents an era of their mid-century development and are collectible pieces. Overall condition is quite remarkable for it's age with light polishing done earlier and is fitted with a riveted Oyster bracelet with date code of 2 69. The dial and hands presents very well with original radium lume intact while the movement is pristine.

These 34mm steel Oyster semi or big bubblebacks are known to have accompanied many explorers on their adventures in the post-war years and the famous ones were the Swiss and British Everest expedition teams between 1952 to 1953. Finally, on 29 May 1953, 11.30am local time, the British team arrived on the peak of Mt Everest. The Rolexes that were used were nothing like the Explorer black dial 3, 6, 9 nos with Mercedes hands that we know but were in actual fact looking very similar to what we see here.

The earliest Explorer bearing Ref.6150 from 1953 are being sold for above S$70K in recent times, making this quite a bargain in comparison. There are very few vintage Rolex watches with red markings on their dials and are all highly prized by collectors.
