This is quite a spectacular example of a Patek Philippe's pocket watch with the desirable hunter case format which is very rare as most were made with Open face format. On average, we see about 30pieces of open face to one hunter case and this case was made in drum style with flat surfaces on both faces.

Watch is in near mint condition throughout with tight triple hinges and the watch stands upright with both covers opened. There are a few marks and dimple dents but nothing too damaging and this watch has survived almost 140 years. There are no personalised engravings on the case which is unusual and this is sought after by some present day collectors who prefer unmarked cases.

This watch was made for the North American market with matching case and movement numbers which means this was a purpose made case and not a re-case (which was common in those years). Due to import tariffs, only the Swiss made movements were supplied while this case was manufactured in US by J&S (Jeannet & Shiebler watch case Co.) and 18ct would be correct as most US makers produce 14ct cases with the higher content reserved only for the most luxurious makes.

The oven baked white enamel dial is the gem here and presented in mint condition, showing no hairlines nor flakes on the edges. A set of blued steel hands completes the watch while thin Roman numerals completes a refined presentation. The most attractive part of this watch is the rarely seen and highly decorative cursive font used for the signature & spelt in English (vs French) for the US market. All hinges including the bow ring are tight which means the watch has seen little use over the century. The high quality movement is jewelled to the center, signed & numbered while plates are decorated with Côtes de Genève and polished edges. Watch weighs about 92 grams.

A rare opportunity and an important piece from late 19th century to be added to your collection. A modern day equivalent would cost much more.
